The Ardelle

The 65' Ardelle coming into Gloucester Harbor in October 2018. The Ardelle was designed by it’s builder Harold Burnham at his Essex, MA yard. It is based on a commercial fishing vessel common in New England in the early 1800s, and is known as a Maine pinky. Its hull is similar to a chebeague boat, but with aft sheer planks that sweep past the rudder post where they meet without the dramatic bend of the planks below.

Burnham milled the lumber from trees discarded by local Cape Ann arborists. He built it between September 6, 2010 and July 9, 2011, the day it was launched. The labor was mostly community volunteers.

The Ardelle takes passengers on public and private sails from May to October at the waterfront loop in Gloucester, MA. http://schoonerardelle.com/ Fishermen’s Voice photo.
