Matt Louis, education director for the OceansWide marine science camps being held this summer at Schoodic Point for kids ages 11 to 19, guides the non-profit’s underwater robotic explorer into the waters off Winter Harbor for its shakedown cruise. One of only 15 such submersible ocean research robots worldwide, the device is equipped with high-definition cameras, sonar, audio recorders and other technology controlled remotely from a support boat from which it can “fly” underwater to depths of 1,000 meters. Young marine explorers attending the two-week residential sessions will have hands-on access to the device, which is built by Saab. There are only 15 of these underwater robots in the world, and this is the only one being made available for operation by kids (ages 11-19) who are interested in all things marine.
