Record-breaking Year for 45th Maine Fishermen’s Forum

ROCKPORT, ME—Management has reported a record year in many ways for the 45th annual Maine Fishermen’s Forum. Held at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine it is the premier commercial fishing industry event for New England fishermen.

Among the high points said Forum Executive Director Chilloa Young, were the outpouring of financial support of the scholarship fund and an emotional ceremony in recognition Port Clyde fisherman Randy Cushman’s efforts to save a fellow fisherman.

Young noted that there were 136 exhibitors at the Forum trade show, ten more than last year’s record. “One of our new exhibitors was also one that drew a lot of attention. “Rugged Seas” makes products from recycled fishing gear”she said.

“First among the firsts”, said Young, “would have to be the record breaking support for the annual scholarship fund.

There was $60,000 in scholarship money donated. The scholarships ranged in size from $1,500 to $6,000.”

Dave Garbo of Garbo Lobster donated $15,000 for five $3,000 scholarships, saying he did it in the name of all the businesses he bought lobster from along the waterfront.

An annonymous fisherman donated $12,000 for two $6,000 scholarships for kids from fishing families. He has given large scholarship donations in past years. There were 27 scholarships in all. The silent auction and cash donations made up the balance of the $60,000 raised. “It was very good, everyone wants to support our kids,” said Young.

The emotional high point, said Young, was a ceremony in recognition of Randy Cushman. Cushman was first on the scene when Arundel fisherman Arnold “Joe” Nickerson’s boat the Hayley Ann was sinking 50 miles off Portland in January 2020. Cushman attempted to save Nickerson before the Coast Guard arrived. Nickerson could not be saved. Cushman said he has a new appreciation for what the Coast Guard does.
