Ashland Village in Winter

This is a wonderful image of the season in Maine that rules all others, yet rarely appears in EIC photographs. Despite Mainers’ very rapid adoption of the automobile, for a good part of the year it was of no earthly use. Winter was the prime season for rural travel by horse, provided there was a firm snow cover on the roads and not too much ice or drifting. Shortcuts over fields—“across lots”—became seasonal thoroughfares. Here we see the electric line on one side of the road, and telephone lines on the other.
