Five Islands Lost to Rising Pacific Ocean
In what scientists are calling the first confirmation of the impacts of climate change on Pacific coastlines, five uninhabited islands in the Soloman Island Archipelago have disappeared from the face of the sea.
The Solomans have experienced annual sea level rises of as much as 10mm per year over the last 20 years.
Scientists used aerial and satellite photographs to confirm the presence of the islands since 1947.
Sea level rise has forced the relocation of several Soloman Island residents over the last several years.
