Junk Delivers Aid to Nicaragua
This November the 39' Chinese Junk Say Lon will be carrying humanitarian aid from her home port in Oakland, Ca to the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua. This delivery will be undertaken with a small volunteer crew and is the pilot mission of the non-profit Green Seas Humanitarian Expeditions Inc. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and is frequently subjected to hurricane damage.
Say Lon was built in Hong Kong in 1966 and has been carefully restored over the last two years by her current owner, John Clifford Fredericks. Mr. Fredericks has offered the use of the three-masted junk, which he will captain on the 3,000 mile trip. After passing through the Panama Canal and heading north along the Nicaraguan coast, the boat will visit and make deliveries at rural communities in the remotest, poorest regions of the country.
