Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

In 1998 I started writing the front page stories for Bill Crowe, the man who started Fishermen’s Voice. At the time, Maine fishermen were fighting against things like Catch Shares and mid-water trawlers. Since losing some of those battles and fighting new ones I have a new job: paper boy. But hey, I’m still on the staff and there are perks. Like delivering papers in a 2020 GMC Denali.

Yes, the December edition made its way to all the regular locations east of Penobscot Bay in a 2020 Denali compliments of the GMC promotion team. I’m not a big truck guy, but I could be persuaded. The Denali rides as smooth as a luxury car and handles amazingly well for its size. Cameras all around provide multiple views for tight situations.

My son, who fishes sockeye salmon in Alaska, and lobsters in Maine, is a big truck guy. He did most of the driving and he was impressed with the power and pickup. Hammering down and the 6.6 Duramax jammed us back in our seats. Passing? No problem even in short spaces. We drove like bandits to get the December issue—with its valuable information on whale regulations and other topics—into the hands of Maine’s fishing communities. Thousands of readers look forward to the timely arrival of the Fishermen’s Voice and have for 25 years.

The Denali got the job done, papers loaded in the bed and back seat, easily accessible through the full rear doors and fancy GMC tailgate that drops down to make a step. Snow didn’t hamper getting the last few papers down to Lubec. In 4wd low, I went places I never believed a truck could go.

All that fun we had driving that monster truck, getting over 20 mpg and we got paid! I may have gone from front page writer to high end paperboy, but I’m still part of the team at Fishermen’s Voice.
