Ladies and Gentlemen, punch up your black boxes, put your picnic tables and plastic chairs on the deck and start your engines! Boothbay Harbor Lobster Boat Races started the Maine Lobster Boat Racing Association season with 39 boats participating on a grey but rain free day.

The races started with three races for Boothbay region lobster boats. There were no entrants in the gasoline powered Race 1. Race 2 (diesel power to 499 hp) had 6 boats led by Marshall Farnham, an excellent organizer of the Boothbay race, in Miss Attitude, followed by Shellene Two (Fred Farnham); All Out (Nick Page, the other excellent organizer); Optical Illusion (Nicholas Hawke) and Charger. Slowhand driven by Marshall Curtis did not finish. Race 3 (diesel power 500 hp +) was won by David Taylor in Misty, a Crowley Beal 33; followed by Rusty Brewer in Look Out; Andrew Page in Sea Star; and Dan Derepertigny in Outcast II.

In Work Boats under 24 feet, Race 4 (Class A skiffs 16 feet and under) had no entrants. Race 5 (Classs B outboards - 31 to 90 hp) was won by Joel Hallinan in Poley One followed by Richard Gilmore in Betty Jeanne. Race 6 (Class D - 91 hp +) Stevie Johnson’s new incarnation of his Jingle Johnson 28 called Sunbird with the standard car option of convertible roof, wipers, turn signals, cooler storage in the trunk and, not the least, emergency flashers outdistanced everyone. Following was Supa Gupp driven by William DeBery, Resolute driven by Allen Thibodeau and Bobalong driven by Robert Robertson.

In the Gas Powered Classes, Race 7 (Gasoline Class A 4 & 6 cyl) D&L Boatworks won in Cry Baby followed by Bruce Farrin, Jr in Summah. Race 8(Gasoline Class B V8 – 375 cid) was won by Whiskey Girl driven by Craig Barter followed by Chris Smith in Linda Carol. In Race 9 (Gasoline Class C V8 376-502 cid), there were no entrants as Bruce Engert was parked on Route 1. In Race 10 (Gasoline Class D - 502 cid +) Galen Alley, in Foolish Pleasure, made his return to the racecourse with a new blower and other modifications to his boat to easily take this race. Race 11 (the Wooden Boat class) was won by Bruce Farrin, Jr. in Summah.

In the 12 Diesel Powered Classes, there were 5 Races (Races 13, 15, 16, 23 and 24, Diesel Classes B, D, E, L and M respectively) with no entrants. Race 12 (Diesel Class A up to 235 hp, 31 feet) was won by Sea Strider driven by Marty Thibault followed by Marcus Curtis in Slowhand. Race 14 (Diesel Class C-235-335 hp, 24 to 33 feet was won Chuck Williams in Mjr. Weakeyes. Race 17 (Diesel Class F 336-435, 34 feet +) was won by Bill Grant in Double G, followed by Ms. Rose driven by Ed Turosian and Optical Illusion driven by Nicholas Hawke. Race 18 (Diesel Class G 436-550 hp, 28 to 35 feet) was won by Todd Ritchie in Seacock followed by Gary Genthner in Lisa Marie. Race 19 (Class H 436-550, 36 feet +) was won by Keith Jordan in Hot Spot II, followed by Outcast II, driven by Dan Derepertigny and Askk’n driven by Ed Shirley.

Race 20, with some of the nicest looking boats, (Diesel Class I 551-700 hp, 28 to 35 feet) was won by Wild One driven by Stevie Johnson followed by Misty driven by David Taylor and Three Stars driven by Chip Johnson. Race 21 (Diesel Class J – 551-700 hp, 36 feet +) was won by Jim Minoot in Hooked Up, followed by Hey Baby, driven by Corey Morris, Look Out driven by Russell Brewer, Sea Star driven by Andrew Page, Molly Ryan driven David Haskell and Decadence driven by Ryan Haskell. Race 22 (Class K 701-900 hp, 28 feet +) was won by Motivation driven by Tom Clemons and seconded by Dennis Young in Christina and Seth. Race 25 (Class N 750 hp + and 40 Feet +) was won by Andy Johnson in Whistlin Dixie followed by Bailey and Bella driven by Keith Jordon.

In the final Free For All’s, starting with the Gasoline Class, Race 26 had surprise winner Cry Baby (D&L Boatworks) winning, Galen Alley having had a break down, and Stevie Johnson running along in Sunbird. In the Diesel Free for All, Andy Johnson in his rebuilt Whistling Dixie, returned to form and won with Tom Clemens in Motivation not far behind followed by Christina and Seth driven by Dennis Young and Lookout driven by Russell Brewer. Jim Minott chose to make an early exit this season with smoke pouring from Hooked Up’s engine near the finish line requiring a tow home.

In the final race, The World’s Fastest Lobster Boat, the order was repeated with Whistling Dixie and Andy Johnson winning followed by Motivation and Christina and Seth with Stevie Johnson running alongside in Sunbird.

Rockland Race Rundown

The Rockland lobster boat races started on June 21. With the ample support of Motor Service Hugo Stamp and FPT Powertrain Technologies, there were many rewards for the 40 boats that showed up.

In the workboat Classes; Class A (16' - to 30 hp) was won by Ripple, driven by Thomas McLennan. Class B (31 to 60 hp) was won by Not Much with Josh Harjula. Matt Winston and Miller Light did not start. There were no entrants in Class C. and ports Class D (91hp +) was won by Sunbird driven by Stevie Johnson, followed by Travis Stone in No Schedule.

In the Gasoline Classes Race 5, D&L Boatworks continued their sweep in Crybaby; Class B was won by Don Hilt Jr. in Mar Don. Class C was won by Mike Dassett in Sarah Louise( a rebuilt Gower) and in Class D (502 +) Foolish Pleasure returned to the course repaired and took the Class for Galen Alley.

Diesel Powered Work Boats Races 9 – 22, Class A was won by Queen’s Lady owned by Gary Hatch(who also graciously played photo boat for the day). Class B was won by Ed Glover and Gracie followed by Bill Oliver in Karen Lane, Ryan Maines in Two Girls, and Travis Fogg in Fair Game. Class C was won by Mjr Weak Eyes and Chuck Williams, followed by Kevin Glover in Quickstep. Race 12 and 13 had no entrants. Race 14 Class F (336 to 435 hp, 34 ft +) was won by Bill Grant in Double G, followed by Ms. Rose driven by Ed Turosian, Gerard Bray in Dawn n’ Linda and Justin Philbrook in Rising Sun. Class G, 436 to 550 28 to 35 ft) was won by Sea Cock driven by Tod Ritchie, followed by Lisa Marie driven by Gerry Genthner, and Thunderstruck driven by John Geyer.

One of the hottest classes for the day was Class H (436 to 550 hp, 36 ft+) was won by Hotspot II driven by Keith Jordan followed by a perennial racer Travis Otis and First-team, Shameless with Weston Ames, Miller Time and Ryan Miller, and Ask’n with Ed Shirley. In Class I (551 to 700 hp) Scott Wood ran unopposed in Wild One. Class J (551 to 700 hp 36 ft+) was won by Cory Morris in Hey Baby, followed by Molly Ryan driven by David Haskell and Decadence with Ryan Haskell.

Diesel Class K (701 to 900, 28ft+) Christina and Seth driven by Dennis Young with a good start, beat Tom Clemens and Motivation. There were no entrants in Diesel Class L, Race 20. Class M. Ryan Post in Instigator ran unopposed. Class N (40 ft+, 750 hp+) Andy Johnson won in Whistling Dixie running a fast race followed by Keith Jordan in Bailey and Bella with his tent and whole crew, followed by Chris Page in Abigail and Carter, a very good-looking Peter Kass boat.

In the wooden boat race, Peter Kass boats led the pack with Abigail and Carter driven by Chris Page first, followed by Sari Ann driven by Vance Bunker, Queen’s Lady with Gary Hatch followed by Gracie driven by Ed Glover and Sarah Louise with Mike Dassett.

Gasoline Free-for-all, saw perennial favorite D&L Boatworks and Crybaby take first, Galen Alley having retired for the day, followed by Sarah Louise driven by Mike Dassett with Stevie Johnson running alongside in Sunbird.

The Diesel Free-for-all, which should’ve been called 1000 hp Class, Whistling Dixie and Andy Johnson came in first followed by Motivation driven by Tom Clements, Christina and Seth driven by Dennis Young, Hey Baby driven by Cory Morris and Abigail and Carter driven by Chris Paige. The final race of the day, the fastest lobster boat, Whistling Dixie ran to form and Andy Johnson took first, followed closely by Tom Clements and Motivation with Stevie Johnson in Sunbird running alongside.
