Capt. Mark East’s Advice to the Careworn, Confused, Lovelorn and Other Outdoor People

Dear Captain East,
I am 16 years old and for as long as I can remember, which probably isn’t too long (I picture u as quite old with all the knowledge u must have), I have loved to sail. I began in an old Dyer Dinghy and can now handle the family sloop which is 29' alone. I don’t want to sail alone around the world, but before I go off to college, I’d like to sail down to the tip of South America. My Mom thinks it’s crazy, but my Dad’s all for it. He thinks it would be a great “grower-upper” and I’d get more from college.

Dear Sailor Dreamor,
“Do it.” If you can pull it off, your Mom will fall into line and be one of your staunchest backers and the hit of her ladies club. Get a copy of Maine Boats Harbors and Homes and hit up the advertisers... designers, builders, whatever, ask them for help. Remind them of their forefathers who sailed the big wind boats around the world at age 16 or younger. Carry their logos on your hull and sails. Go for it. This country needs more young people like you, willing to face life as it is.

Dear Capt. East,
I am a water-colorist living in the southeastern United States and quite successful. My husband of some years and I live on an old Chris Craft Cruiser which we both enjoy very much. My husband has got it is his mind that we should adopt a young child. I’m not too keen on the idea of bringing up a child while living on a boat and continuing with my career. What might your suggestion be.

Dear Salt Water Diapers,
You’ve asked the right person. During my second marriage we raised two children on a 36' sailboat until the oldest was 12 and unfortunately split the blanket, though nothing to do with the kids. It was some of the best years of my life and my ex says the same on the few occurrences we’ve spoken since. You will not regret it. Think of the water–color subject of a child!! And, some lucky youngster will have a terrific start in life.
