New Bedford Working Waterfront Festival

The Fish Tales tent at the New Bedford working Waterfront Festival where fishermen’s real life stories are recorded as a part of a community documentation project.

The 10th annual New Bedford Working Waterfront Festival is again bringing a wide range of events and innovative new presentations to a growing public interest in the fishing industry. New Bedford is the nations oldest and largest commercial fishing port.

One of the new events this year will be the “Flume Tank” This large underwater tank is used for testing fishing net designs aimed at reducing bycatch and habitat impacts, etc.

Another is the Fish Tals project. Real life fishing stories will be collected from fishermen and others in the industry at the Fishtales tent on Steamship Pier as part of the Community Documentation Project. To learn more about the projectvisit: www.voices.nmfs.noaa.gov
This year’s theme is Sustainability and Safety at Sea. Also featured is a Man Overboard event and a Seafood Throwdown.

The list of activities is long. There plenty of things for kids to do and see. Kids Events are on Saturday and Sunday from 11-5pm.

There will be fishing vessel tours, harbor tours, whaleboat races and rides, lots of music, cooking demonstrations, contests and foods of all kinds. For more information visit: www.workingwaterfrontfestival.org/
