Capt. Mark East’s Advice to the Careworn, Confused, Lovelorn and Other Outdoor People

Dear Capt. Mark,
For many years now I’ve wanted to build a boat by myself or with the help of my family. I’ve ordered at least 20 sets of plans and can’t make up my mind which one to start. The other problem is my wife doesn’t want me to build it in one side of the garage because she’s afraid I’ll never finish it like the upstairs bedroom I started when we bought the house 12 years ago.

Dear Woodchip Dreamer,
Have you considered completing or getting someone to complete the bedroom then move your tools to the garage. Section off the garage with canvas or plastic to limit the sawdust from getting all over your wife’s car, then go through your boat plans and put them in order of preference, time, and ease of construction. Pick #1. Order your materials along with a portable vacuum to vacuum her car and promise her a meal out each and every week. Then do a calendar of work to be accomplished each week. You’ll get it built.

Dear Mr. East,
A few years ago I bought an older wooden Grand Banks 42’ and had it moved to a nearby boatyard to fix it up. I only get the occasional weekend to work on it and my girl friend keeps asking when I’m going to put it in the water.

Dear Launch Despondent,
Buy a chain saw and a Boston Whaler or other fiberglass boat. Cut the Banks up but do not cut the Whaler in two as you see in advertisements. You’ll protect your relationship, your sanity, and your wallet.
